Only in her first term in the Washington State Legislature, Representative Noel Frame has quickly made a name for herself as a strong advocate among state lawmakers. The 36th Legislative District, and State of Washington, have been well-served having Representative Frame serve on the state’s Higher Education Committee. Representative Frame supports strengthening access to the “American Dream” by investing in the complete spectrum of public education, from early learning to public higher education, reducing college tuition, and increasing affordable housing. With just one year under her belt, we are excited to endorse Representative Frame, and to see what she does next as a major ally of public higher education advocacy.

Representative Roger Goodman has been a consistent champion of higher education throughout his time serving in the House of Representatives. Despite not being on any committees directly related to higher education, Rep. Goodman has found many ways to support higher education. His strong voting record, and advocacy for Washington’s community and technical colleges, as well as our four year institutions, speak to his support for public higher education. Rep. Goodman is a frequent lecturer and speaker at local institutions, in part following in his father’s footsteps as a Professor at Brown University. We are proud to endorse Rep. Goodman and look forward to his continued support of Higher Education in the State of Washington.

This impressive experience enables her to sit on three legislative committees; serving as Vice-Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, and as a member of the Education and Early Learning & Human Services Committees. This is Rep. Kilduff’s first endorsement from Graduate Washington, and we are incredibly excited to support her work on public higher education in the Legislature.

Representative Lillian Ortiz-Self’s passion for education is apparent. As a long-time school counselor, she has been an advocate for education and students. As the Vice-Chair of the House Education committee, she has backed up that passion with a solid history of legislation and policy. We are excited to once again endorse State Representative Gerry Pollet for 2016. Rep. Pollet‘s continued dedication to the students of Washington is evident in his initiative and willingness to go the extra mile on their behalf. This past February, Pollet was the prime sponsor of HB 2820, The “Washington Promise Program” bill, which would provide free community and technical college tuition and fees to eligible students. “Opening the door to free community college for Washington residents is a research and data-proven way to boost high school graduation rates,” he said. “And it opens the door to success for so many families in the state of Washington by allowing them to return to school and get that career-changing workforce certificate or their AA degree that will entirely change the security of their families forever.” Rep. Pollet’s creativity and dedication to students make him a strong voice, and we are excited to work with him in Olympia.

For the third election in a row, Graduate Washington is pleased to endorse Rep. Marcus Riccelli, a constant champion of higher education. It is clear that Rep. Riccelli understands that continued investment in public post secondary education is an investment made to the future of Washington’s economy. A former student advocate himself, he has demonstrated his deep knowledge of higher education by supporting legislation giving students greater access to university fiscal decisions. With Rep. Riccelli’s steadfast commitment to college access, and affordability, and his strong support of bringing student voices to the Legislature, we are excited to see how he continues to support the future students of our state.

Passionate about protecting access to college and relentlessly engaged with all higher education stakeholders, Larry Seaquist has been the driving force behind many of the significant victories for students and families over the past several years: holding the line on budget cuts, tuition increases, and critical financial aid programs. Unafraid of standing up to members of either party, he will also be the most steadfast advocate for students and defender of higher education as the legislature tackles the multi-billion dollar McCleary mandate. We are pleased to again endorse him, and look forward to his return to Olympia.

One of the youngest legislators elected in Washington state history, Representative Melanie Stambaugh quickly established herself as a dedicated advocate to higher education. Herself a recent graduate of University of Washington’s Foster School of Business, Rep. Stambaugh understands the challenges of being a student in today’s economy. This invaluable insight has guided strong decision making in her role as the assistant ranking member on the House Education Committee. We look forward to continuing to work with such a strong advocate for public higher education.

After two terms in the House, Hans Zeiger has a long and sterling track record on higher education issues. He successfully passed legislation that brought greater efficiency to our colleges and universities and mandated public comment periods at board of regent meetings. He also supported legislation that would improve access to credit transfer information, limit differential tuition, and increase student involvement in governance. Credit should also be given to Zeiger for being one of two dozen Republicans to support the passage of the Dream/Real Hope Act. He has been a strong champion in the House, and we know he will continue to advocate on behalf of students and higher education in the Senate.
